Zamboanga City boxers lead day one of festivity

Zamboanga City boxers made a rousing start in the day one competition of boxing in the on-going Zamboanga Peninsula Regional Athletic Association Qualifying Meet 2024 at held Joaquin F. Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex, this city.

Prince Gian Macasling, a Grade 7 student of Maria Clara Lorenzo Lobregat Memorial High School made a bright start for young Zamboangueňo boxers contingent by scoring a unanimous decision against Zamboanga Sibugay’s Lance Andrey Languido in the School Boys Under 46kgs category. Despite his opponent’s height advantage, Macasling scores a standing eight count by unleashing a barrage of punches into his opponent’s face in the first round. Macasling’s counter punching proves to be fatal as his opponent tries to score a lucky punch in the second and third round. A newbie in the group, Macasling’s victory was witnessed by his proud parents and relatives.

Macasling’s victory was followed by victories in the other weight categories. Palarong Pambansa 2023 boxer Mark Anthony Luna proves that experience is the best teacher as he pummels his opponent by scoring two standing eight counts in the second and third respectively against Kent Ian Rey Mananquil of Zamboanga Del Norte. The lefty Luna proves too much on his way to a unanimous decision.

In the Junior Boy’s 50 kgs category, Zamboanga City bet Carlo Angelo Ogilve scores a nervy split decisions opposite Zamboanga del Sur’s John Lio Maghinay. Ogilve’s slow start in the first round almost cost him the match as Maghinay’s meticulous punching proved too much for him thus limiting his options. Trained by Felix Tanamor, the stocky boxer out of Don Pablo Lorenzo Memorial High School made some adjustments in the second round with his one-two combination in the body, weakening del Sur’s boxer ability to counter punch. Sensing victory, she went full throttle in the last and final third round by displaying uppercut punches with combination.

In an interview with coach Jose L. Pada III, the victory of his boxers showcased that they are on track to follow the footsteps of 2020 Summer Olympic Bronze Eumir Marcial who is also a Zamboangueňo. Supported by local fans, their victory also assured them at least of a bronze medal.
