Catch-up Friday: Enhancing Learners’ Reading Proficiency

In a world inundated with distractions vying for attention, the art of reading often finds itself relegated to the periphery. With the exploration of digital screens and the relentless march of technological advancements, the simple pleasure in reading can seem like a quaint relic of the past. Yet, it is precisely in this modern milieu that need for dedicated reading time becomes all the more pressing.

DepEd Memorandum 001 s. 2024 states that the “Catch Up Fridays” program will dedicate half of every Friday to reading and the other half to values, peace, and health education. DepEd said that it’s the reading program that will “give learners opportunities for reading intervention and reading enhancement through developmentally appropriate reading materials.

Catch Up Friday was implemented as a dedicated day for learners to focus solely on reading, providing them with an opportunity to catch up on reading deficiency, explore new literary works, and enhance their literacy skills.

The Taguisian Elementary School in Taguisian, Mabuhay Zamboanga Sibugay under the leadership of School Head Mr. Vicente O. Lebosora Jr. along with its 23 dedicated teachers, has initiated the "Catch-up Friday" reading program on January 12, 2024. This innovative endeavour aims to narrow the educational disparities among learners to emphasize the pivotal role of reading in achieving their life aspirations.

The commitment of Taguisian Elementary School, to the sustained execution of the Catch-Up Friday initiative underscores its dedication to cultivating a reading-centric environment. This ongoing effort is designed to in-still among learners a profound appreciation for literacy, recognizing its indispensable role in enhancing academic achievement.

Recognizing the diverse needs across grade levels, the school head's directive to submit individual action plans ahead of implementing Catch-up Friday, underscores a tailored approach to address learners' reading challenges. These plans, informed by thorough learner observations, target specific deficiencies and outline strategic methods and techniques to effectively execute the reading program.
